From cave painting to plastic art in computer sciences
Truly, the arts are something fantastic, to meet people dedicated to activities that go beyond practice and utility, to leave real or abstract elements that enrich the lives and daily lives of people, leaving a mark and even influencing how the world is viewed and contextualized.
I am not an artist in the traditional form of art (architect, sculptor, visual arts (painter, draftsman and engraver), musician, writer (poet), scenic artist (theatrical artist, dancer, mime and circus performer), Cinematographer, Photographer or cartoonist). But if I consider the work that I do, the exercise of the profession in which I conceive my life as an art.
Beautifying life also means making it easier, being able to make a different world a reality, those fantasies that allow us to have a better quality of life and that influence the way in which daily activities and dreams of a better life are carried out.
We express the way of thinking of each generation and leave it as a basis for the next, from those hardware artists, who began to mold the architectures of controllers, processors, memories, etc.; those who integrated into them increasingly powerful layers of abstraction to facilitate their manipulation, use and standardization; those who took these interfaces to an increasingly abstract level and finally, those who make use of this accumulation of ingenuity, art and mysticism to enrich and facilitate their lives.
I have had the great pleasure of making use of 2 different generations of software, the one created in 1988, legacy of generation X, with the mainframe AS400, thankfully it was not the version of that time, but the V5R4 version; today being the powerful IBM i 7.4; result of that generation of “I alone can handle everything”, the one of the lone superhero and the legacy. And the cloud that began to form its concepts since 1996 with distributed computing, was until 2006 that saw its commercial birth in AWS; marked by the path of a totally different society, “live today” and the preference to rent and share.
And that is how today we coin terms such as legacy or earth (to talk about mainframes and this old software, which is avoided and even avoided to be understood), if you are old and rusty, they would say; and the cloud to refer to that in which we dream of working, where the opportunity to do something there, makes our mouths water!
Today we are standing on the shoulders of great engineers, architects, electronics, physicists, chemists, programmers and thinkers of every generation who decided to give their all, a legacy that today we use to enhance every moment of our lives and from which we should see how they evolved.
I am not versed in both worlds, I could consider myself a novice in each of the aspects of the 2 platforms, and being very bold I intend to show that they are really not that dissimilar in their general components that I have had the pacer to interact with, both on the IBM i 7.4 mainframe, and on the AWS Cloud.
But there are also surprising elements that give a new perspective to working on IBM, with the possibility of being migrated itself, bringing the world of giants to the cloud with infinity i .
There are many roads to travel, and as our society changes, and each generation brings a new challenge; it is always good to look to the past and contemplate its legacy in each of our days.
I dedicate this article to my father José Antonio Panqueba Martínez, who on his shoulders and many of his colleagues, organized and structured the electrical infrastructure of this country and who in his legacy stands out as a putative son of Boavita-Boyacá and mother María Eva León Calderón, a tribute of selfless, strong women and heads of households, this is the Latin American silent generation, who have already seen 5 generations pass in front of their eyes and who for me deserve all the recognition for their leadership, conviction and principles.
